My friends, Wet Nurse are currently making a month long trek around the east coast to promote their new album out on Italian label, Astro Girl Records called "Daily Whatever". I can attest that the record is really good since Jeffrey and I were lucky enough to snag a copy only a few days after it came out. You can keep yourself updated on their upcoming adventures via their Facebook page, or their Tumblr account. Also, check out a list of their tour dates over at Punk News.org to see if they're stopping by your town. Make sure you buy their merch, a few beers and offer them a couch to sleep on. They're super nice, and cute to boot.
Listen to their music here while you check out their pins below.
So as you may already know, this is actually my second batch of buttons that Wet Nurse bought from me. You can check out that entry right here. In this new batch that they needed for their tour, there were a few design changes.
This time, we kept the Hannah Bozenhardt (here's her Flickr account) photos of the gals getting splashed with soy milk.
Nina (Guitar/Vox)
Susana (Bass/Vox)
Vanessa (Drums)
Then, we added 25 of the Ben Lyon design that I redid for this batch.
The "Daily Whatever" album cover.
And finally, the current font design they're using which is from the album artwork that Hannah did.
Wanna hear more bands with twins? Check out these You Tube videos I dug up off the top of my head.
Battle Of The Beards is an event that's going on this Sunday (June 17th) on Wall Street in Downtown Orlando. I had a hard time finding out more information about the event occuring in other towns. I just saw they had one in the past in Atlanta. The website, http://battleofthebeards.net/ has a link to "Bring The Battle To Your City". From what I gathered, it is the first time this event is happening in Orlando. Surprisingly, Orlando does have a pretty healthy facial hair population, despite its humid, swampy and "balls hot" weather. At least half my male friends in town sport at least some type of facial hair. My husband, Jeffrey, used to have a mustache that awed by some, but myself not included which is why he's since shaved it off.
I was lucky enough to be asked to make the promotional pins/buttons for this event which included two different designs. I didn't design them though, I'm not sure who did.
The red is just the end of the face since the background is white and disappears on a computer screen sometimes. The first pin is for the "Battle Of The Beards". The second is for a website of facial hair grooming products.
Make sure to head out to this event this Sunday in Orlando, at Wall Street Plaza. There's contests, live music (couldn't find which bands) and more.
Commoditie Booking is a, well, booking company out of St. Augustine Florida headed by Nick Haneman. My band, Hot Hands, has played their main venue, Nobby's twice. Both shows were met with lots of smiling beach kids, banging their heads and crowd surfing like crazy. Smaller towns are pretty much always the best kept secret when deciding on where to venture out with your band on tour. They appreciate the effort much more and show up excited to see some bands while having fun getting drunk with their good friends. With St. Augustine, we not only had that, but the beach within minutes and all the Florida history of Ponce De Leon and the Fountain Of Youth you could stomach. We even hung around the fort and watched a cannon go off.
These pins are part of the tour packs that I made for the bands, etc that helped us along the way.
This one is based on a poster for a show Commoditie put on with Natural Child. I made Phil Collins' eyes red in the button version.
These are with the Commoditie Booking logo, done in a few different colors.
The Blue Rajas are a two piece band from Richmond, Virginia that my band, Hot Hands was lucky enough to play with (also with great Richmond band, Hot Dolphin) in April while on our tour. They're also sisters, Zoe and Gracie, who play guitar and drums and sing the most fun, poppy and danceable party music. They even do their own cover of The Blue Hearts' "Linda Linda" (its also done by an all girl group in a film of the same name) which is originally in Japanese.
Zoe had the genius to do her own English translation which is slightly unlike the original version. That technique reminds of Ronnie Bird, a French Rock/Pop singer from the 1960s. He would adapt lots of English language songs into his native French, even if the lyrics didn't match up for the most part, as long as they made melodic sense.
(Ronnie's cover of "Don't Bring Me Down" by the Pretty Things which he translates into "Tu Perds Ton Temps" or "You're Wasting My Time"
As a part of our thank you's to each band that helped us along the way, Jeffrey suggested that I create special button packs for them. I was a little rushed, so I didn't do the best job I could have done, but each band was really excited and thankful. I should have made some for Eureka, California, who helped us out a bunch in Athens. That was an unfortunate oversight on my part due to all the craziness that comes with preparing for a tour. I hope I didn't forget anyone else.
This is a photo that I lifted off The Blue Rajas Facebook page and made three different colors.
This is a cover of a pulp novel. I unfortunately didn't save the original so I'm not sure of what the actual title of the book is.
This last one is from a pulp/adult book called "Dykes On Bikes"
These are 5 pins that I made up for my brother Eric's birthday which was in February. I also included a CD of a cassette tape I transferred of a recording of our first band called Dethlehem.
These are images taken from "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark", which is a trilogy of young adult books with many cryptic tales and chilling, gruesome images. It was written by Alvin Schwartz and drawn by Stephen Gammell. I have the Harper Trophy edition paperbacks of part one and two of the trilogy (which are beaten to hell). There was eventually an all in one hardcover edition that included each book. Later, to much controversy, another version was released with new artwork by Brett Helquist . The site, Adventures In Bad Taste, did a side by side comparison of the both artworks.
I'm not sure where this term originates, but the first time I saw it was probably on the cover of the Oblivians, "Popular Favorites":
This is a drawing from the inner sleeve of "Screaming With The Deadguy Quintet EP", by Deadguy. You can listen to it here. The artwork is really neat. I like a good Woody Woodpecker parody.
Finally, this is taken from one of the many "Reform School Girls" posters. That's Wendy O. Williams towards the front. I still haven't seen this movie. I added my own text to the front.
Audio Junkie is a Miami based video series of mostly local bands by brothers Greg and Eddy Alvarez. Musicians themselves, they also play in a surf band called the Jellyfish Brothers who I also lucky enough to make pins for (entry coming soon!). For both orders, I was basically told to go crazy with color and do whatever I wanted. I ended up making 11 different variations. The logo was created by Ronnie Rivera from bleedingpalm.com:
Beach Day is a great fuzzed out surfy pop band from Hollywood, Florida. My band, Hot Hands played a show with them in Holiday Florida at Orbit 19 Lounge. There's 3 members: Kimmy, Natalie and Skyler. We knew Skyler from The Black Rabbits which was a band he played drums for with this brother Jetson. Kimmy and Natalie also played in that band in one of the later lineups before changing members around due to The Black Rabbits' (or really Jetson's) relocation to North Carolina. Natalie also plays in a band called The New.
Make sure you get a pin from them next time they play!
This is the second order that I've received from them, so I'm including all the pins that they asked me to make for them. These are the designs that I was sent that I tweaked a little:
Then, here's the bonus pins that I made up for them:
This one uses a picture by Ben Guzman that I brightened and used BN Machine font with a yellow bar using an Exclusion filter (I think).
This is from an early 1980's comedy called "The Beach Girls". I've never seen it but it was ideal to find a beach related picture with two girls and a guy. The font is called Kool Beans.
